Greece has a mainly Mediterranean climate. This type of weather is characterized by warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters. However, due to the variety of micro-climates across the country and local variations, this weather varies throughout Greece. The mainland is very mountainous, with the highest peak being Mount Olympus at an altitude of 2,918 m. Areas in the north have more of a transitional climate between continental and Mediterranean weather while some mountain areas can experience an alpine climate.
